(Reuters) – Shares of Renren Inc rose as much as 8 percent Friday, after the Chinese social networking site swung back to a profit in the fourth-quarter and forecast strong 2012 sales, helped by a shift in focus to mobile Internet applications. Beijing-based Renren, which operates one of China’s largest social-networking sites Renren.com, said more and more of its users were accessing their accounts through smartphones, which offered opportunities to monetize its mobile Internet business better. …

LONDON (Reuters) – British Web users face having their Internet connections throttled or suspended if they are found to have downloaded music or movies illegally after Internet service providers (ISPs) BT and TalkTalk lost a court appeal on Tuesday. The ruling by Britain’s Court of Appeal means that ISPs will have to send warning letters to customers suspected by film studios or record labels of having illegally accessed material to which they own the rights. If a customer accumulates too many warnings, the ISP may be required to slow down the person’s Internet access or suspend the account. …

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Internet service providers need to work harder to prevent hacks, data theft and other fraud, including contacting customers whose infected computers have been hijacked by organized crime and helping them clean out viruses, the head of the Federal Communications Commission said on Wednesday. FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski said he sought “smart, practical, voluntary solutions” to the massive problem of Internet fraud and data theft. He estimated that 8.4 million credit card numbers are stolen online each year. …
