BEIRUT (Reuters) – Syria’s state news agency said that an “armed terrorist” group blew up an oil pipeline in Syria’s eastern province of Deir al-Zor, near the border with Iraq, on Saturday. “An armed terrorist group detonated an improvised explosive device on a oil line near Abu Hammam, in the province of Deir al-Zor, which led to a fire,” SANA said, giving no more details. SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) – Five years ago, Twitter’s critics dismissed the idea that news could be transmitted in 140 characters. Now, Adrian Aoun thinks it can be done in just five or six words. Aoun, a 29-year old entrepreneur in Seattle, unveiled on Wednesday an automated, algorithm-driven news aggregator called Wavii that strips articles down to its bare essentials — who did what — and presents them in a customized, Twitter-like feed. In most news articles, Aoun said, “The ‘what happened’ and the analysis of what happened is coupled.” “I want to separate that a little,” he said. …

The shutdown was ordered by the state-run communications service, the local Internet providers told Reuters, requesting anonymity. Users who tried to access Facebook or the two websites, which published a story critical of President Imomali Rakhmon, were automatically re-directed to the home page of their provider. …
